The Renewable Energy Agenda Holds Water, Politics Aside

Used Oil
Source: Peter Griffin / www.publicdomainpictures.net
The recent survey that most Americans still favor further development of alternative energy shows that the renewable energy agenda should continue. This is not to say that pushing for it must be based from the decision of the majority alone but I think it is a wise move. The public, the economy and the environment as well must not be subjected to the ill-effects brought about by using fossil fuels.

What’s Stopping Us From Turning Waste Into Energy

We all know that garbage is one of our main problems when it comes to environmental pollution. But what if we burn it and use it as fuel for our power plants?

Generating electricity from wastes
through incineration is
a good way to dispose garbage
Photo Credits: Kim Newberg / publicdomainpictures.net
Incinerating our wastes and converting it into a source of electricity is a good idea you might say but, as it turns out, it is not that feasible. That is why, as of now, the trend is to look for alternatives other than this to solve pollution and electricity generation.

The US Government boosts
ethanol production through
tariffs and subsidies
Talks on the allocation for ethanol tariffs and subsidies will heat up once more as they are due to expire this year. With the current high prices of food products as a result of the nearly 40% allocation of corn for producing ethanol, will it be wise to remove the mandate to reduce this? With policy makers and concerned groups lobbying for the removal of the tariffs and subsidies on ethanol, what would happen if they are allowed to continue?

Reducing Ethanol Tariffs to Combat High Prices

Developing ethanol for electricity generation
is a way to lessen the
nation's dependence on fossil fuels
Postponing the development of ethanol may have adverse consequences in the future. If we stick with using fossil fuel and not develop any infrastructure for alternative fuel, and if fossil fuel prices go up, which is very likely in the future, the economy may be placed at a large risk due to the dictates of the prices of alternative fuel should the country not have one fully developed at that time.

Urbanized will be shown on October 11, 2011 at the Detroit Film Theater at the Detroit Institute of Arts in Detroit, Michigan and on October 12, 2011 at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio.

If you’re interested in how cities today are being designed, you may want to check out Urbanized, a documentary that tackles the ways on how to prepare a city as the number of people living in it grows. Various experts in the different fields concerned will add incites on how to assess, plan, engineer and reshape the cities that we are now living in. This film intends to provide information to start a global discussion on how cities should be in the coming years.

What is interesting about the film is that it suggests that we take a proactive stand in designing new cities. It will then be good to know how ordinary citizens, like us, can contribute to its designs as well as how the new designs will affect communities. And, if the changes are upon us, what avenues are open so that we can easily adjust to the changes.

When I began a research about driverless cars, it came as a surprise to me that we might be seeing this as a common thing on the streets in maybe 10 to 20 years. While we do know that cars will eventually get to this point, what struck me was that this transition in the way we drive is very near - all thanks to technology that continue to pave the way for cheaper but faster car parts and computers.

It is “near field” because it only needs a few centimeters or less in order to pair up with another device. But Bluetooth and WiFi can also do this, right? What’s the difference?

To a non-professional but enthusiastic photographer, details about the 13.3-by-8.8mm sensor, 10-30mm lens, aperture and ISO features do not matter, because the important thing is what the cameras can do and not how they do them. In addition, the cameras should be easy to use and should take good pictures every time.
